Adjusting the UPPER and lower Cases On a 1947 Royal Quiet De Luxe...As Per Ted Munk's Tutorial Post.

Here's how this Royal was typing prior to any fiddling;

Note how uneven the upper and lower cases were. It took me a few goes at getting it how I wanted it.
The top section of this next scan shows how I went after a few adjustments. The bottom section shows how it looked after my third or fourth attempt at adjusting it...without making note of whether I had turned the screwdriver clock-wise or anti clock-wise.

Onwards and upwards, teeritz! I continued on until I got a result that I was happy with. In the end, I was more amazed at how simple it was. Once you know where to start.

  1. Congratulations! Good work on the QDL.

    I modified a set of nut drivers and some ignition wrenches after my first go at adjusting the U.C. / l.c. adjustments on a Royal.

  2. I didn't think they made 'em that small, Bill. I'll have to get a set of small wrenches. Something tells me this won't be the first and only time that I'll need them. Thanks!

  3. Congratulations! That Royal now really types beautifully!

    I think the word-joining feature is common to every old Royals; in my Quiet DeLuxe I discovered that you can prevent it by finding the "rhytm" at which your typewriter likes to run. Too fast, and it will join the words; too slow, and it will jump and insert spaces where it shouldn't. But when you discover the right tempo, the little Royal produces a very nice text, and has a very enjoyable typing action.

    Maybe my Royal is just an old-fashioned, demanding diva; but that little trick (finding just the right speed to type on it) works like a charm... most of the time.

    1. Miguel, thanks! I think you may well be right about the rhythm required with these old Royals. They are ALL demanding divas. They didn't call them Royal for nothing. We are servants to these machines.
      BTW, I tried to hit the translate button on your blog, but had no luck. Might be easier if I just learn Spanish. I'll have another try.

    2. Talk about divas... Please let me know if you could make the translate button work or not; if the thing doesn't cooperate, I'll be more than happy to translate whatever entries you're interested on.

  4. You're welcome, Teeritz! (:

    Hmmn, soft left margin? I feel another "Typewriter Repair 101" post coming up. That's another easy one, once you know where the adjustment screws are.

    The non-spacing, I dunno about. Both my late-40's Royals came to me with no spacing problems or skipping. Just lucky, I guess.

  5. This is wonderful! I'm working on a 40s QDL that is totally out of alignment. Need to get my other mini-wrenches (and unused can of WD-40! Yay.) from home and I'll give this a try tomorrow. Thanks to you and Rev. Munk!!
