Quick Question About Smith-Corona Silent Supers...

Thanks for reading, and my apologies for the lousy photo quality.

  1. I do not know about the Silent Super, but I really like my Skyriters.

  2. Oh, you'll like it. The '50s Silent Super is based on the same mechanism that your Sterling uses, but everything is beefed up and a few extra features are added. Then in the '60s the company started to cut corners and their machines feel cheaper and more rattly. So this is the cream of the crop of Smith-Corona portables.

No comparison to the Skyriter, which is OK for a little typer but nowhere near the sophistication of the Silent Super.

  3. I've got a HG Palmer Silent Super (what they were re-branded as here in AU) and I have to say - it's not bad. The keys are better than my Sterling, and the feel of it is generally - more solid. Not as sexy as the sterling though, but also - not as loud. I like it - and I have seen plenty of people swear by them.

  4. .... But furthermore, the Skyriter is a more compact model. I've typed on one once, and I didn't have much love for it. It wasn't bad - but you get the same value for money from an Adler Tippa.

  5. I do not know about the Silent Super, but the Galaxie Peter brought with him when he visited Switzerland this spring was very nice to type on. And I like my Skyriter as well. Oh, and that just gave me the idea which typewriter to use for my yet-to-be-written Skyfall post.

  6. simple answer. yes. Aside from a quirk on my personal machine, I love it. such a nice feel--a solid feel. My love may just be due to emotional attachment--mine was my first typewriter, mbut it/s a nice machine.

  7. I'd vote yes. You'll like it a lot. They're not the sexiest machines, but they've got a great, solid feel and are real workhorses. It won't be the prettiest machine in your fleet, but it'll be one you reach for a lot when you just want to type comfortably and reliably.

  8. Very well-made. I find the whole super 5 run a bit too "tight" for my taste, but definitely top quality goods.

  9. What others have said. It's not contest: the Silent-Super is a tank, but a well-built tank. The key action is smooth and, indeed, very quiet. The Skyriter is nice and portable, but it's a poor choice for long-term typing compared to the Silent Super.

  10. I like mine, but I have found Smith Coronas frequently have escapement issues. My Silent-Super is fantastic (and blue!). I know Tom Hanks likes the Silent-Super, he used one of his when he wrote me back!

  11. Thanks for the responses, all! Looks like it might just fit in nicely.

  12. My Silent Super (1956) is one of the smoothest typewriters in my collection. If I had to choose one model of Smith-Corona, it would be this typewriter.

    1. Fantastic! The one I bought is a 1956 model, apparently.
For those of you who are participating in NaNoWriMo and took the time to respond, I thank you, and best of luck.
